See How They Grow is an intergenerational gardening project aiming to bring together families with children under 5 and older, more experienced gardeners. The idea for the project initially came from East Sussex County Council’s Locality Network meetings. There was a strong desire for intergenerational projects to be developed, utilising community spaces such as Seaford Children’s Centre which has its own garden.
The ‘See How They Grow’ concept encapsulates the aims of the project;
Helping young children and their families to grow their own plants and healthy food, initiating relationships between families and older residents in order to provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, practical gardening help and sharing gardening spaces, and using outdoor activities to facilitate and encourage healthy development in under 5’s.
It is being developed by voluntary stakeholders from across East Sussex including local parents, gardeners and volunteers from the Greenhavens Network, as well as East Sussex County Council, Burleys and SCDA.

6 pilot sessions have been planned to take place once a week during the summer holidays at the Seaford Community Garden, with a view to continuing weekly sessions at Seaford Chiildren’s Centre during term time.
We are excited to see how this idea, starting from a small seed could grow and flourish into a tremendous opportunity for alfresco befriending, shared garden spaces, early years support and mutual education between generations.
