Have you heard about Active Travel?

Employers across Sussex are encouraged to sign-up to the Active Travel Challenge for a healthier and more environmentally-friendly commute. The challenge incentivises people to walk, cycle, take public transport and car share by competing on their own or as part of a team and takes place from the June 1 – 30, 2019.

Janie Burrage, Active Travel Officer from Sustrans told us:

“The Challenge invites people to log their daily journeys and gives them feedback on how many journeys they make, how much exercise they get and how much money they save by not travelling alone by car.

Every week this month, we are giving away different spot prizes. To be in with the chance of winning, you will need to log at least two journeys a week, and each week the value of the prizes increases. As well as this, there are also grand prizes to be won. Participants who log more than 20 journeys between 1st and 30th June will be entered into a random prize draw to win a two night stay in a luxury cabin at Swallowtail Hill.”

Last year I persuaded our small office team to join in with this challenge. As an organisation we already discourage car journeys, with public transport the preferred option where possible. In addition four of us already car share when travelling to work on the same days (two cars of two), and two of us take the train to Falmer.

There are lots of team (and individual prizes on offer) and in fact I was lucky enough last year to win a very healthy basket of fruit!

It’s a great idea, and did make us stop and think about the journeys we were making, and whether we could choose a more healthy option. So our CEO hopped on one of her bikes instead of getting into her car, and one colleague even offered us a ride on the back of her motorcycle! Though I’m not sure anyone took her up on that!

So do try and get your workplace signed up, get fit for the Summer, have fun and maybe win some prizes along the way!
